"Study to show thyself approved unto God..." 2 Tim 2:15
Many times in life we hear the old saying, "Knowledge is power." Most of the time is refers to some earthly education, but I feel this saying applies to us in our Christian walk as well. I believe the beliefs and practices of the Primitive Baptists are unlike anything found in the religious world today, thus many times requiring concrete evidences in Scripture when we are asked to explain our stance.
I was commented to once by a friend who was unfamiliar with the Old Church that "I must be really passionate" to take the time to learn so much about the Bible. I thought to myself, how LITTLE I actually know. Despite myself, in his comments I realized how little many of today's Christians actually know of God's word (it is sad when people as myself with a limited knowledge of scripture seem educated). The simple truths of God's sovereign grace for one are plainly mentioned so often in the Bible, its hard to miss it unless you just don't read at all (or blinded). Sadly, it is completely foreign to a great deal of people today who consider themselves believers (a zeal but not according to knowledge).
I feel that although the Primitive Baptists don't have as many ministers as other denominations, we are blessed to have very able ones who plainly teach using God's word. I cannot begin to explain all the truths I have been taught since I joined the church years ago. We must be thankful for this blessing from God.
Additionally, we must strive to increase our knowledge in Gods word. It is our duty to learn as much about our Master as we can, and there is no better way than to study and pray. It is important for us to be able to defend the truths we hold dear with scripture, rather than opinion. What better way to defeat evil-inspired, incorrect, and slanderous views of the church than by using the sword of the Spirit, the word of God? Furthermore, how can we use God's word if we ourselves do not have a growing understanding of it?
Also, we must be grateful to God, that He has given us eyes to see, and ears to hear. That we are not in darkness, but know of the completed work of His Son and enjoy the fruits of His Kingdom while we dwell here on earth.
